Dating from the 12th Century, this incredible complex of thousands of rooms in Vardzia, hewn into the rock faces in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, is well worth seeing and generally far from many tourist trails of the more heavily-trammelled areas of Georgia.

Brilliant Vani Archaeological Museum, in the Imereti region, sits on a hilltop right beside the dig which uncovered so many of the finds on display. Beautifully laid-out and passionately curated, this collection is in an area little-visited by tourists, but is an incredible find all of it’s own.

Georgia has the world’s oldest winemaking culture, and if you haven’t yet strayed from Pinot, Syrah or Merlot to experience Rkatseteli, Saperavi or Krakhuna varieties, then perhaps now is the time - and where better than at the tables of wine producers themselves?
